Raid: Shadow Legends is a dark-fantasy collection RPG where you summon Champions using Shards, build teams and battle through a twelve-level campaign, the Arena, elemental dungeons and the Clan Boss. It has hundreds of Champions, six rarities and a deep gear and Mastery system, which is exciting but genuinely overwhelming at first. The good news is that a smart free-to-play start beats reckless spending, because the players who thrive are the ones who build a focused core rather than a shelf of half-geared Legendaries. This guide is for new players on Windows who want a strong account without wasting weeks on the wrong heroes. Play Raid: Shadow Legends free on PC and use the priorities below to start on the right foot.
Getting started
A few systems drive everything in Raid, so learn them before you spend anything:
- Rarities: Champions run from Common up through Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary and Mythical. Rare Champions are the workhorses of an early account, so do not dismiss them.
- Affinities: Magic, Spirit, Force and Void form a combat triangle (Magic beats Spirit beats Force beats Magic), while Void ignores the triangle. Matching affinities against bosses matters a lot.
- Factions: every Champion belongs to a faction, which unlocks the late-game Faction Wars mode, so keep at least one copy of Champions you might sacrifice.
- Currencies and energy: Silver is plentiful, Gems are precious, and Energy limits how many stages you can run, so plan your sessions and never let Energy sit capped.
- Shards: the five Shard types (Mystery, Ancient, Void, Primal and Sacred) have very different odds, so treat Void and Sacred Shards as rare treasures rather than something to burn on a whim.
Best starter champion and reroll advice
Early in the tutorial you choose one of four starter Champions. The clear pick is Kael, a Dark Elf whose area poison damage makes early campaign farming, Dragon dungeon runs and Clan Boss all far easier. Galek and Athel are solid runner-ups, while Elhain is more of a single-target specialist.
- Should you reroll? Raid does not have a fast built-in reroll, but you can create a fresh account to try for a strong Void or Sacred shard pull in the early summons. It is optional; a good starter plus free Champions from progress missions is enough to clear a lot of content.
- Grab the free progress-mission Champions. Champions like Warmaster material, Coldheart-style snipers and speed buffers are earned simply by hitting account milestones, so chase those rewards early.
- Keep an Apothecary or any speed buffer. Turn-meter and speed support carries early teams more than raw damage.
Progression and free-to-play tips
- Auto-farm campaign 12-3 (Brutal) later. First, build a team that can farm early campaign on auto to feed food Champions and Silver.
- Do not level or gear food Champions. Only invest in keepers; everything else is fodder for skill-ups and rank-ups.
- Prioritize the right dungeons. Push Dragon for gear, then Spider, Fire Knight and Ice Golem as your roster grows.
- Save Gems for Energy refills and a second Market refresh, not random summons.
- Run the daily and weekly quests plus your Clan Boss keys every day. Consistency, not spending, builds a Raid account.
Mistakes to avoid
- Spreading resources across too many Champions. Fully gear a small core team first; a half-built roster clears nothing.
- Ignoring gear stats. Speed and the right main stats matter more than set bonuses when you are new.
- Wasting Sacred and Void shards blindly. Save premium shards for 2x event drop rates when possible.
- Skipping the Clan Boss. Even a weak team should chip the Clan Boss daily for chest rewards.
- Neglecting Masteries. Once you have keepers, Masteries give a huge free power spike.
Pick Kael, farm the early campaign, invest only in keepers, gear for Speed first and lean on daily quests and your clan, and your Raid account will snowball fast. The players who stall are the ones who chase shiny Legendaries they cannot gear or feed. Start lean, build a focused core team, unlock Masteries, and grow from there one dungeon at a time.
