Once Human has spent the two years since its July 2024 debut refusing to sit still, and the summer of 2026 might be its biggest moment yet. Developer Starry Studio, under NetEase, rolled the game onto consoles on August 25, 2026, bringing the free-to-play survival hit to PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S. That console push arrives on the back of the Version 3.0 update line, with the latest 3.0.4 patch tidying up abilities like the Soul Summoner's ultimate and the Phantom Radiance Sparrow.

The headline stays the same for PC players, though: Once Human remains free on Windows, and it is still one of the more genuinely strange survival games on the platform. This is a post-apocalyptic open world where reality has been warped by an otherworldly substance called Stardust, populating the map with grotesque, memorable Deviants you can capture and put to work.

Scenarios Keep the World Fresh

What has kept Once Human alive where other survival games stall is its Scenario system. Rather than one static server you grind forever, the game runs themed, time-limited Scenarios that reset progress and reshape the rules, the map and the endgame. It is closer to a live-service season structure than a traditional survival sandbox, and it means there is almost always a new server cycle to jump into whether you are a returning player or a total newcomer.

The console launch adds its own scenario servers so new players are not thrown into worlds where veterans have a two-year head start. Cross-progression ties your account together across platforms, so PC remains a perfectly good home base even as the audience widens.

Build, Fight, and Get Weird

Mechanically, Once Human blends the pillars you expect from the genre with a distinctly unsettling identity. You scavenge, craft, and build sprawling bases that can be packed up and relocated as scenarios demand. Gunplay is solid and leans into looter-shooter progression, with weapon and gear rolls that reward optimization. And then there are the Deviants, part companion, part resource, part horror set piece, that give the game its hook.

Regular shop adjustments, loot crate probability disclosures and battle-pass style seasonal content round out the live-service loop. It is a busy game with a lot of systems, but the free entry point means you can figure out how much of it you want to engage with at your own pace.

With Version 3.0 stabilized and a console audience now flooding in, this is a strong window to give it a look. The scenario cadence means you will never be more than a short wait from a fresh start where everyone begins on even footing. If a weird, atmospheric survival game with a real sense of identity sounds like your kind of thing, you can Play Once Human free on PC right now on Windows and see how strange the apocalypse can get.
