Project Entropy is a free-to-play space strategy MMO from FunPlus, the studio behind mega-grossing mobile titles like State of Survival. Released on Windows in April 2024, it asks you to command alien civilizations, conquer uncharted planets and assemble hero-led fleets across the galaxy. We played the PC client, and it is exactly what that description promises: a polished, competent 4X strategy game that rarely takes a risk.
Gameplay
The loop will be instantly familiar to anyone who has touched a mobile strategy MMO. You build up a base, gather resources, research upgrades, and assemble customizable ship fleets led by hero commanders. Mechs and weapons can be upgraded and tuned, and battles play out across both competitive PvP and cooperative PvE encounters. Fleet composition and hero selection give combat a light tactical layer, but the moment-to-moment experience is more about long-term buildup and alliance coordination than hands-on control - once fleets clash, you are largely watching numbers you set up beforehand play out. Hero commanders sit at the center of that setup, each offering passives and active skills that reward a focused fleet over a scattergun one.
Content and progression
Project Entropy leans on seasonal content updates and an overarching narrative campaign to keep the galaxy turning, with alliance-based community play and cross-platform multiplayer forming the social backbone. Progression is the usual tiered climb - upgrade buildings, research trees, ships, mechs and heroes - paced out over weeks. There is enough here to sink time into, but little that distinguishes it from the many space 4X games chasing the same audience. Events and seasonal resets keep the treadmill turning, and alliances give the whole thing a reason to log in, yet you will rarely encounter a system you have not met in a dozen other mobile-born strategy titles.
The space setting is handsome and the systems are solid, but you will have played this game before under a different name.
Tech and monetization
Presentation is a strong point: the space battles look good, with slick ship models and sound design that sells the sci-fi fantasy on a PC screen. It is free to play with in-app purchases, and given FunPlus's track record, you should expect the standard aggressive free-to-play economy - resource packs, speedups and progression bundles that reward spending and gently penalize patience. Nothing here breaks the mold of top-grossing mobile-strategy monetization, for better or worse. Timers, tiered resource sinks and limited-time hero banners all point the same direction, and competitive alliances tend to be built on at least some spending. You can play it entirely free, but you will feel the ceiling well before the paying players do.
Who it's for
Fans of space 4X and strategy MMOs who want a good-looking, no-surprises galaxy to build and battle in - especially those who enjoy alliance play - will get their money's worth from a free download. Players hoping for fresh ideas or a spend-free competitive shot should temper expectations.
Verdict
Project Entropy is a well-made but deeply familiar space strategy MMO. It does the fundamentals cleanly and looks the part, yet it borrows its entire structure - and its monetization - from a genre playbook we know all too well. Fine if you are craving exactly this; forgettable if you are not. 6.0/10.
